The No-Fault laws concerning auto insurance in the state of Michigan are confusing to many people. Here is a brief example of some key benefits:
- Liability - Your insurance policy will protect you from lawsuits as a result of bodily injury or property damage you do to someone else. The liability follows you no matter what car you drive, so it does not matter if you are driving your car or someone elses. You are covered. Possible problems with coverage can arise when you are furnished a car you do not own for regular use, when you are furnished a company car and do not own a personal auto, or when you do not own a car but occasionally drive one. Contact your current insurance agent, (or us), to discuss how to possibly eliminate any gaps in coverage.
- Physical Damage Coverage - Comprehensive coverage is referred to often as storage insurance, it covers anything that damages the vehicle other than collision. Ie: tree falls on it, it cathces on fire, someone vandalzes it or steals it, a rock cracks the windshield, or water damage. Collision provides coverage if you hit something with your car or somebody hits you. There are three type of collision coverages: Basic or regular, which means you always pay your deductible, Limited collision, which means you only have collision coverage if you are less than 50% at fault, and Broad collision which means you only pay the deductible if you are 50% or more at fault in an accident. The physical damage coverage you carry on your vehicle follows the vehicle no matter who drives it, (unless they are an excluded driver on your policy). So if your neighbors car will not start and borrows yours and is in an accident, the liability coverage on his policy covers them, the collision coverage on your policy covers your car. This helps reduce the amount of lawsuits clogging our courts. You can save money by increasing the comprehensive and collision deductibles on your auto policy.
- Personal Injury Protection - This provides medical expense and wage loss coverage if you, or any resident household family members are injured in any auto related accident, does not matter if you are driving your car, a neighbors car, or you are walking or bicycling down the street and a car hits you, the (PIP) coverage on your policy covers you. You can choose primary or excess coverage. Primary means your auto insurance carrier covers all of your medical bills and lost wages, excess means first your health insurance covers the bills, whatever they do not cover, your auto insurance company pays, (a 300 to 500 deductible may apply). If you are retired with no wages to cover, you can choose excess wage loss. There is a discount for choosing excess coverage. Even if retired you still have to have excess wage loss because there are other coverages included such as a small life benefit, rehabilitation coverage, and a small amount of coverage if you need someone to mow your yard or go to the store for you while you are recuperating.
- Kids away at college more than 100 miles, some companies will give you an additional discount.
- Does your child have a B or better average? Some companies will give you a good student discount.
- Most companies will give you a multi-policy discount if you have both your home and auto insurance with them.
